Join us for an informative and fun filled Window Preservation Alliance Fall Workshop hosted in St Louis, MO October 18th & 19th.

Our workshops are designed to bring us together as a window restoration community between our big splashy Annual Meetings. We also aim to bring in our allies like architects, preservation professionals, and historic preservation advocates. And let’s not forget our wonderful vendors of products that enable us to do what we do.

1:00-2:00 pm // Session One: Keep Sash Out of the Trash - Energy-efficiency and Old Windows (1 AIA CE)

We will look at the environmental impact of producing replacement windows, the untapped potential of historic windows, and the ugly truth of the replacement window ROI. This session will help give window restoration pros the language to explain to their customers and the general public why replacing original windows should not be the first course of action to save money on utilities and increase energy-efficiency.

2:15-3:15 pm // Session Two:  Keeping it Simple: Traditional Window Finishes Using Linseed Oil Paint and Shellac (1 AIA CE)

A discussion and demonstration on linseed oil paints and shellac finishes. This presentation will cover when and how to use linseed oil paints, along with some of the benefits and drawbacks of this type of finish. We will also cover traditional shellac finishes, how to mix your own, when is best to use shellac, along with some of the drawbacks and how to mitigate them.

Panel discussion focused processes for those with smaller shops.

Focusing on business structure and contracts.

11:15-12:15 am // Session Three: History of Stained Glass in STL (1 AIA CE)

A brief history of window glass and stained glass and its manufacturing processes with a focus on St. Louis. This presentation will focus on the timeline of glass use and manufacturing types including decorative glass and window glass, and the history of stained glass in North America with a focus on the St. Louis area. It will finish with a technical look at how stained glass is constructed, stained glass lifespan expectations, and a brief look at maintenance and repair issues.

12:15-1:00 pm // Lunch and Networking

1:00-2:30 pm // Session Four: Hands-on Stained Glass Repair (1.5 AIA CE)

A hands-on workshop in diagnosing and making simple leaded glass repairs. We will go over how to diagnose stained glass repairs, understanding when repairs are necessary and when to have repairs done by a stained glass studio. We will review how stained glass panels are constructed in order to understand what repairs are needed and the use of basic glass tools: cutters, pliers, soldering irons, etc.

We will end with an opportunity to try your hand at making some simple repairs.
